PEI Golf For All

Prince Edward Island was named the 2011 Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year by the International Association of Golf Travel Operators. PEI might qualify as undiscovered by the international community of golf enthusiasts but it has long been known as Canada’s number one golf destination.

There are more golf courses on PEI per capita than any other province in Canada. They cater to all tastes and all levels of proficiency. They are all within a few minutes’ drive from the capital Charlottetown or Summerside, PEI’s second city. Located in spectacular settings PEI’s golf courses have the advantage of being close to beaches, accommodations and tourist sites.

Home to ten of the top 100 golf courses in Canada designed by the likes of Graham Cooke, Les Furber and Stanley Thompson, PEI is peppered with some 32 golf courses in all. Each of them offers a unique setting and unique challenges.

The most famous of PEI’s courses is the Links at Crowbush Cove. It received the commendation of Canada’s Best New Course in 1994 by Golf Digest and has been played in competition by well-known pros such as Vijay Singh, Mike Weir, John Daly and Fred Couples. In a spectacular setting bordering the coastal dunes and the Atlantic Ocean on the north shore of PEI, the course provides challenging holes with immaculately maintained fairways, greens and bunkers.

For a great day of golf there is perhaps no better option than to play both the Dundarave and the adjacent Brudenell River Golf Courses. They are located between Montague and Georgetown in the east of Prince Edward Island. Both are equally challenging courses, and as is invariably true for all courses in PEI, located in breathtaking surroundings. For families, the site of the two courses in a Provincial Park is ideal because non-golfers can entertain themselves for the day by swimming, boating and horseback riding.

About 20 minutes drive to the south of Brudenell and Dundarave is one of the most challenging long 9-hole courses you are likely to find. Designed by Jeff Fuller, Eagles View Golf Course is bisected by MacLure’s Pond which is crossed by a scenic bridge. This is the kind of course that provides the expert golfer with difficult holes and can, as well, be enjoyed by the less skilled golfer. It is a good choice if you have a party of mixed ability.

On the north coast, near the popular tourist destination of Cavendish, there are several excellent courses. Stanhope Golf & Country Club, is just a few minute’s drive from Charlottetown. This popular course overlooks Covehead Bay. It is a mature course that has been popular with visitors to the island since 1970.

Right in the heart of Anne’s Land, the popular Cavendish beach area, is Eagles Glenn Golf Course. This new championship course, designed by Graham Cooke, is particularly enjoyable for those who choose to walk. The views from each of the tees and greens are well worth pausing to take in.

If staying in Charlottetown the golf visitor to PEI will likely play a round at Fox Meadow Golf & Country Club located in Stratford, a short 7 minute drive from the capital city. The course is friendly to both the expert and those developing their skills. And for those who would like to learn the sport or hone their skills, the course is home to The Canadian Golf Academy. This unique school offers a broad range of courses for all levels of golfers. Have a look at their facilities and talk with the professional instructors to determine what you can do to improve your game.
