With such a rich history, it is no surprise that Georgetown is the capital city of Kings County. Georgetown is located on the eastern shore of Prince Edward Island and functions as one of the island's largest ports and economic generators. Before European contact, the Mi'kmaq Nation inhibited the Georgetown territory.
Georgetown had an interesting beginning. A French businessman, Jean Peirre Roma, landed in Georgetown with 100 people aboard his ship in 1732 to found a settlement to feed and support the French military stationed at Fortress Louisbourg. The settlement later grew larger from the successful ship building industry that hit its peak in the late 1800s, during the Victorian Era. Georgetown is home to Prince Edward Island's only active shipyard today, the East Isle Shipyard.
For those interested in theatre, the historical theatre, Kings Playhouse, is located in Georgetown. There are shows every evening, from musicals to dramatic plays and the playhouse also hosts the East Coast Explosion Festival of comedy and music every summer. Georgetown houses nearly a dozen of other historical buildings, all of which you can see on guided walks throughout Georgetown.
If the outdoors intrigues you, there is a unique trail that follows the old Prince Edward Island Railway route, which stopped carrying trains in 1989. This trail, the Confederation Trail, links communities together and offers the best way to see Prince Edward Island's terrain up close from one end of the island to the other. Georgetown is 52 km (33 mi.) from
Charlottetown.
