Wood Islands is a small fishing community situated on the southern shores of Prince Edward Island. Wood Islands is actually one of the southern most towns on the island, also positioned on the northern shores of the Northumberland Strait. Wood Islands, a member of Queens County, takes its name from the many small islands just south of the community that are all populated by thick forests. As well, a ferry terminal in Wood Islands runs directly south to Caribou of Nova Scotia. Wood Islands, not actually an island itself, can be reached travelling from
Charlottetown along Highway 1 in just 59.8 km (37.2 mi.).
Wood Islands is the proud home of the Wood Islands Lighthouse, built in 1876, which still operates today for the local ferry. As well, the Lighthouse is situated on the beautiful southern shores, offering grand views of the sea and coastline. The Northumberland Provincial Park offers walking trails, advantageous view points of the seaside cliffs and a scenic park. The provincial park also features picnic areas, a beach and play areas for children. The Kings Byway Scenic Drive is just as its name states, circling the provinces eastern shores. Jack's Road, a beautiful walking trail, is positioned in the midst of the woodlands, wildlife and a stream. Also, enjoy local seafood and shopping while in Wood Islands.
Wood Islands accommodations include seaside bed and breakfasts, cottages, motels and campgrounds.
