Orwell Cove is along Highway 1 near the south eastern shores of Prince Edward Island. As well, Orwell Cove is a member of Queens County and as of yet, is still an unincorporated community. The nearby town of Orwell garners its name from Lord Francis Orwell, once the British Minister of Plantations. The town name of Orwell was implemented in 1769 by Surveyor General Captain Samuel Holland and Orwell Cove was later settled by Scottish immigrants in the early 1800s. Key industries in and around Orwell Cove include fishing, agriculture and lumbering. Orwell Cove is 31.6 km (19.6 mi.) southeast of Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island.

Orwell Cove is located just north of the Northumberland Strait shores, which boast beautiful views of the water and shoreline cliffs, as well as an advantageous vantage point for watching the pretty sunsets. In nearby Orwell Corner, a historic village consists of information on the local history of the area, portrays artefacts and also includes beautiful heritage buildings. The Sir Andrew MacPhail Homestead, erected in 1912, consists of local community information, events relating to art and a restoration project regarding the indigenous forests of the province.
