Cardigan is positioned near the eastern shores of Prince Edward Island and belongs to Kings County. Cardigan was named in honour of James Brudenell, 5th Earl of Cardigan. As well, Cardigan was officially incorporated in 1954. In the 1800s, Cardigan prospered as a shipbuilding community, and saw its lumber industry grow at that time. Today, the most prosperous industry in Cardigan is the fishing industry. The provincial capital, Charlottetown, is 45.9 km (28.5 mi.) west of Cardigan.

There is definitely much to do in Cardigan, which is surrounded by three different golf courses, include the Brundenell River Golf Course, which is considered by many to be the finest course in the province. Cardigan also offers scenic cruises and sailing charters. The Rodd Brunedell Provincial Park features horseback riding, pools, fine-dining, a luxurious spa and of course, a beautiful park. As well, there are guided and non-guided bicycle tours offered near Cardigan. An advantage to possessing Canada's smallest library is that it actually becomes an attraction, which is exactly what the Cardigan library is, consisting of about two thousand books. Cardigan is home to the Cardigan Water Science Centre, which offers tours, insight into a fish hatchery, a water recirculation facility, outdoor hiking trails and many activities for children. Be sure to visit the banks of the Cardigan River, relax and watch the sunset.
