Summerside is located in Prince County and is Prince Edward Island's second largest city. For centuries, members of the Mi'kmag Nation settled the land occupied by the present city of Summerside. European settlement in Summerside took place in the late 1800s, with the building of a shipyard and the connection to the Prince Edward Island Railway. The railway helped Summerside become a major seaport, importing and exporting goods to the rest of Canada via New Brunswick.
In the early 1900s the shipyard's production decreased and Summerside's main industry became the trading of fox pelts. The International Fox Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Summerside, capturing the important legacy the silver-fox trade had in the area and in the world.
There are numerous festivals in Summerside including the Scarecrow Festival, the Lobster Carnival, the Spinnakers Landing, a summer-long Celtic Festival and the Summerside Roots Folk Festival. For those interested in music, Summerside is home to North America's only year-round Celtic school, The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada. There are daily lunch performances at the college and other special concerts during the evening.
Other Summerside attractions include the Prince Edward Island Sports Hall of Fame, the Summerside Shipyard, The Indian head Lighthouse, the Summerside Outer Range Lighthouse, the Loyalist Monument, and the old Royal Canadian Air Force RCAF Station Summerside. Summerside is 65 km (40 mi.) from
