Malpeque is centrally located on the northern shores of Prince Edward Island, along Highway 20. Malpeque is also a member of Prince County. The Mi'kmaq once referred to the land as a "big bay," since of course Malpeque is positioned by Malpeque Bay. Before it was titled Malpeque, the community was known as Magpec. Malpeque today is still an unincorporated town, and is small is size. Malpeque is mostly a fishing and tourism community. Cavendish, perhaps the most popular tourist destination in all Prince Edward Island, is a total driving distance of just 24 km (14.9 mi.) east of Malpeque.

Malpeque is a proud home of the Fanning School at Cabot Beach, which is a Provincial Heritage Site. Fanning School was constructed back in 1794, and is fully restored. The Keir Memorial Museum delves into the history of Malpeque and its surrounding area, including the past lifestyles of the Mi'kmaq, the Acadians and the British. A local beach features walking trails, swimming, picnic areas and plenty of beautiful, unforgettable scenery. Malpeque is also home to kayak tours.

Malpeque accommodations include beautiful cottages, bed and breakfasts, motels and campgrounds.
