Hunter River is positioned in the central region of Prince Edward Island and is a member of Queens County.  Hunter River is also situated on the shores of a lake of the same name. It has been noted that Samuel Holland named the community after Thomas Orby Hunter in 1765, but some residents of Hunter River believe otherwise. As well, Hunter River was officially incorporated as a community in 1974. A railway was built at Hunter River in the 1800s, which at the time, vastly increased the pace of development. Hunter River is 22.9 km (14.2 mi.) northwest of Charlottetown.

Hunter River is very close in proximity to Cavendish Beach, and even closer to Rustico Bay, the Farmers' Bank of Rustico, the sand dunes, deep sea fishing and the Prince Edward Island National Park. Hunter River is home to a beautiful 18-hole golf course, art galleries featuring local artists, heritage buildings, excellent cafes, dining options and magnificent views of the river, farmlands and the pretty landscape.

Hunter River accommodations include numerous cottages and bed and breakfasts.
